Meanwhile Rotorua city is actually built inside the Rotorua caldera and Taupo city is built inside the Taupo caldera. When, not if, one of those blows to the sky without warning (other than mine now and at other times) there won't be evacuation and deaths will be about 60,000 or maybe 300,000 if a frothy high speed magma flow zooms down the Waikato river path and destroys Cambridge, and Hamilton.

That will destroy all electricity supply to Auckland and points north of Taupo so that will mean 1 million people becoming refugees.

After that cataclysmic calamity they will hold official enquiries to find out why Civil Defence wasn't on the case and make sure it never happens again.

Meanwhile Jacinda wrings her hands about a few invading Moslems stuck on islands after trying to bust into Australia.

Several years ago a friend wanted me to share a helicopter ride to White Island. I said no. Same for the suggestion to visit Stromboli when on Salina in Italy a few years ago ... I said no. People later died on both.

But playing the odds I have dared to spend several nights over the decades in Taupo and Rotorua and many days there. In fact I lived in Rotorua for a few months when young and ignorant.
