Four years ago I posted an update on Darko, the leader of a "punk" band in Myanmar whom I first ran across in 2012 and sought to help. He and his group, Side Effect, were subsequently featured in the very first episode of Anthony Bourdain's award-winning counterculture culinary travel show Parts Unknown. Darko's job back then was manning a small stall in a mall selling men's suits, but he was fiercely passionate like nobody I knew about music. I was able to get his band accepted into the prestigious SXSW festival, got them and their manager visas, and enough money for them to spend a week in Texas. Darko then got hired by Turning Tables, an NGO, that supports music as important self-expression for youth. Darko then created the Voice of the Youth Festival back in 2015. It's really grown into something special. This is from yesterday:
