He also said while campaigning to end the War in Vietnam. Nixon was carpet bombing NV with devastating results. Thirty years later NV generals stated they were strongly considering to surrender. Political pressure and war protest became to much and Nixon withdrew.

Nixon had character flaws for sure. Those who know enough to theorize, Nixon probably wanted to handle the punishment of Watergate himself which would have been brutal. War protest out of control Nixon felt the country could not handle Watergate. Wasn’t a selfish decision he was thinking.
