Probably. Reading up about Compaq in the early days I learned
that they set themselves apart from 150 other computer companies
by advertising heavily on TV. The others had ads in magazines.
The product was not basically different, nor was it innovative:
they all built IBM clones. Marketing and advertising made the
difference. Where are the other 150 now?

Compaq also made sure they got shelf space in stores by giving
resellers a larger margin.
