yes, Reagan used our tax dollars on a wild spending spree knowing full well that the Soviets could not afford to NOT match us and he broke their backs by draining their scarcer resources from all sorts of infrastructure and consumer requirements so that they could compete with Star Wars, a fake and phony program if there ever was one.

Star Wars forced the Soviets to spend impossible sums even though they knew Star Wars could not work (just as our own science and tech advisors said) because they could affornd NOT to on the off chance that we might pull it off.

We won the Cold War by shooting dollars at them instead of missiles and bullets. We broke their economy and we did it intentionally - but Reagan/Weinberg never ever told the American people that's what they were up to. In fact Weinberg has vehemently denied it - "we had no way of knowing the Soviet economy was crumbling" he said. BULLSHIT!

The worst of it is not the deceit to the American public, not the multiple increase in the American debt, but that it wasn't necessary! They were going to crumble anyway from the contradiction inherent in their "planned" economy.

We are fortunate that we only (!!) have the burden of the huge debt and high (by historical standards) interest rates - we could have imploded also. But don't take my word for it...
