Canadian Ecologist Frightens Kids

KANANASKIS -- With many adults set in their wasteful ways, talk of environmental sustainability is best served to children who will be living in a dramatically different world, ecologist David Schindler said yesterday.

Schindler, a world-renowned water expert from the University of Alberta, said he aims his dire messages of conservation and environmental responsibility to school kids.

"We're all pretty set in our ways and I think looking at people who really don't get it -- who leave their cars idling while they're in the grocery store for an hour in the winter and things like that -- we're not going to reach those folks. We can reach their kids."

Schindler says while today's generation and their elected leaders have refused to deal with looming water shortages and global warming issues, unavoidable change is coming.

"By the time people who are six- to 12-years-old now are grown up, we're going to see a different political landscape and a different environmental one."

Schindler was one of the guest speakers at an environmental education conference in Kananaskis.

Schindler, who has received countless awards for his work and had more than 250 scientific articles published, has been a tireless critic of the way Canada uses water.
