I believe Manhattan is a tough place to try to live if you're poor.

Unfortunately, life is unfair. We know, from studies, that wealth is often a matter of luck- despite the prosperity evangelicals desire that it be a gift from God or the Ayn humpers belief that it's all hard work. If it were simply hard work, all those amazing janitors I've met would be millionaires- but they're not.

Liberals often live in some of the best places, and since liberals want to believe diversity is possible even when it isn't really affordable, I think that causes some cognitive dissonance. We need to realize that 1. just as caviar and yachts aren't available to all, not everyone can live in the most desirable zip codes and 2. we need to provide for people who are working hard and can't live anywhere- by moving them to areas where there are jobs and affordable housing and 3. there has to be some affordable housing even in wealthy enclaves or you won't have any of the workers you need to do lower paid jobs- and those jobs are incredibly necessary, even if we don't compensate people as if they are. Coming to grips with those 3 problems, if we can, will make our cities more livable. And we have to start hospitalizing the insane and the drug addicted. It's not humane to let them just wander the streets until they die there- and it creates huge public health issues.
