Chief the rest of the story completed after many years. My wife is visiting her parents in SC. I'm home watching the dogs, cat and doing a bit of exploring leftovers I brought over from my parents house. I found pictures of the Winchester which my dads Uncle John gave him. He sent the gun back to his uncles son, Stan in Calif.. I heard the story from my father, but now I see it for real. Stan had a picture of his dad pictured with the gun & bear he shot with that gun. This when he was a cowboy.
