What do you tell a spouse when he/she finds out how much you lost on Novell?

First I use Joe's approach --- its only a paper loss until you sell and I'm a sophisticated long term investor (where's that wine glass). Second I remind her how much I bought recently to average out the loss. Third I remind her how brave I was to buy more when I did and catch Novell at the bottom. I then compare myself to some of my colleagues on this thread that missed the boat (VK). Finally I point to all the other technology stocks on which I made money while holding Novell.

You can basically get away with this approach as long as you don't begin to talk to your spouse about Novell's marketing strategy. My spouse knows how to follow a stock chart, knows what a P/E ratio is, and has already asked when she can buy something with the "profits".

Basically I don't find Novell's building new offices in Silicon Valley to be a particularly good use of our cash. Lease!!! Put the money into product.
