Joe Biden had a message to miners, one that if he tweeted could get him kicked off Twitter.
It is also the same message Hillary had for miners in 2016: learn to code.
The Hill reported, "Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden spoke to a crowd in Derry, N.H., a town that many miners call home. He acknowledged the economic setbacks and job insecurity that coal miners face these days, and gave them some advice: learn to code.
"According to Dave Weigel of the Washington Post, Biden said, 'Anybody who can go down 3,000 feet in a mine can sure as hell learn to program as well... Anybody who can throw coal into a furnace can learn how to program, for God’s sake!'
"According to Weigel, the comment was met with silence from the audience."
The reasons for the silence are numerous.
First, there is no coal mining in New Hampshire. None. The 260 mines in New Hampshire are for beryllium, feldspar, mica, silica, and copper.
But even if there were coal mines in New Hampshire, Biden would be met by silence, or more likely uproarious laughter.
Coal miners do not want to be computer programmers. They like physical labor.
They already have job skills. The heavy equipment operators can easily move to Texas and get into construction. Heck, they could move to New Hampshire and learn how to mine copper. They do not want to.
Many coal miners are quite computer literate because like just about everyone else in America, they have a home computer. They likely know how to program. They do not want to do it for a living, in part because their income would be cut in half.
But Biden has no idea what coal is or how it is used.
Throw coal in a furnace? Who does that? The coal mined today is largely used to generate electricity.
The Hill pointed out, "Although they are often touted as a solution, retraining programs have a questionable record of success. Some displaced coal workers do transition into other fields or industries, but critics say that the jobs that former coal workers usually find tend to pay only $12 to $15 dollars per hour as opposed to the approximate $75,000 a year salary that coal workers had while working in the mines."
Hillary made same condescending learn-to-code pitch 4 years ago. Donald John Trump embraced coal mining and coal miners.
He carried West Virginia by 42 points in a year in which West Virginians elected a Democrat governor for the sixth time in a row.
