Michael,
Of course Ronnie was a great speaker! Would you expect less from the Prez from Central Casting? Shall we discuss supply-side economics and the trickle-down theory? The Homeless? They're practically an ethnic group now. I believe that Seattle has enlightened and compassionate programs for The Homeless. Be forewarnd, however: Seattle's near complete eradication of its homeless has caught the attention of San Francisco, a city with a large number of homeless. An article in the SF Chronicle the other day suggested that if SF were to purchase one-way Greyhound bus tickets to Seattle for The Homeless of San Francisco, it would solve the problem here once and for all.
Ronnie opened the floodgates and sent to the streets many people of marginal mental capacity who were largely unable to function in society. He also deregulated a lot of things which we now see should have stayed regulated.
President Reagan's policies of less government perhaps gave the citizenry a rush of feelgoodness at the illusion that he was cutting government spending, but I think if we look at the overall picture, we see that it has cost us more in the long run--much, much more, and not just in dollars.
President Bush? In my opinion, he did about four good things while he was in office, and I've forgotten three of them. We did get a lot of good humor mileage out of his running mate, however. His failure at reelection pretty much says it all about his Administration. Some say he would have done better if he'd eaten more broccoli.
President Nixon was a strange one. I think most Amaricans disagreed with his wage and price freeze of 1971. He was long on foreign policy, but fell short on domestic policy smarts. He hung with the wrong people, mostly his college and poker playing buddies and, worse, turned them into trusted advisors and cabinet members. He did misspeak when discussing the school lunch programs, stating that catsup was a vegetable.
The less said about the Carter Administration, the better, IMO. I still can't figure how he won that election. Does anybody remember the mid-sized earthquake in Southern California that occurred the day after President Carter waa elected?
