Brendan, Tie Ratios and OEMs... Question... did you ever have a car that had features that you really didn't know about? I just found a little button, just out of sight of the driver on my loaded Subaru Legacy, turns out to be a button that turns on a water squirt at the headlights to clean them a bit I guess... anyway, it came with the car and I really didn't know about it til now. A friend of mine just bought a NEC Ready PC with a bunch of stuff included, one of which was a built-in Zip drive. There was NO MANUAL, just Zip Tools on the HD and the backup CD-ROM... Nothing on how to use the Zip, nothing on its features, Nothing of a promotional nature! Iomega needs to look into this for sure. I did brief him on how the Zip could help him back up files, store his graphics from a scanner he bought about the same time, and many other features of the Zip. So, he is now using it and just went out and bought a box of Zip disks from CompUSA. So, its not too surprising that a lot of folks have that "little extra slot" on their new computer and a single disk that came with it and they have no idea of what to do with it. Iomega might put some of that ad money into a nicely produced graphic tutorial extolling the virtues of their new "included" Zip drive and what it can do for them. They might also look into providing a few games, productivity software as an introduction. I know they are already including Recordit software in the Gig-o-Color 10 packs... a good start, they are quite expensive compared to the 10 pack of regulard Zips or those from Fuji. So, yes the OEMs do have a poor Tie ratio now, but IOM needs to wake up and get some good marketing going in this regard... Are you listening out there Mr. Kim Edwards! Someone please get this message to him! This is something that must be addressed NOW! Ad campaigns are going to help, but one-on-one stuff like an automatic promo the first time you put in your new Zip disk that comes with you new PC would be a great help. That's my opinion for what its worth... Mel |
