Well, Doug, thanks for stopping by the Feelings thread, and welcome. It is true that in Washington power is the perception of power--if Billy's ratings drop in the polls the Republicans will feel no need to be cooperative in trying to get programs through, and Clinton will be a very lame duck.
I personally think that would be a shame, but I often tend to support Democrats more than Republicans. I was sort of hoping Billy would leave office, because there is not much chance the Democrats will win more than one or two congressional seats if he is as damaged politically as he looks right now, and he just sort of hangs in there, accomplishing little.
While politics is a dirty game, I think Gore is basically much less corrupt than Clinton, and that his instinct is to be a pretty straight shooter. It would have been very difficult to be Billy's vice president and walk away clean as a whistle. I am personally very concerned about environmental issues, and sort of hoped that the president resigning would give Gore a good go at cleaning up the mess and then running from a strong position in the next election.
