A large percentage of people on that plane were Canadians, who might of sort of looked like Americans or perhaps talked like Americans. Perhaps it wasn't an air defense event. It could have been an explosive device. Consider in the amateur video of the event on Twitter last night. The plane descended in a gentle flying maneuver. This indicates its wings and stabilizing tail gear remained after explosion, maybe not controllable but functional in the air. The craft descended in a gentle three hundred sixty degree turn before running into the ground and blowing up from the contained jet fuel in the wing tanks. That much is easily seen in the video.

So it could have been a bomb in cargo or antiaircraft strike that tagged the cockpit. Certainly in the dark of night something happened to cause that bright glow seen from the ground miles away. I assume if the cockpit survived the initial event there would have been radio distress called picked up. The event happened at just shy of 8000 feet. So who knows? Would recommend investigative teams from Boeing and NTSB but that is not likely to happen.
