DIS: How to make a stock screener - Lesson 1

I see that 6 people gave recommendations acknowledging a desire to learn how to make a stock

screener. I have decided to make these lessons public rather than issue private lessons. It is easier

this way for me and I don't want to see a raft of private questions about what the lesson was about.
Your questions on the material must be public and I encourage questions because if you don't quite understand what I am talking about, it is useless to continue on IMHO. Your questions can help

others and I will answer them as best I can. These lessons will not be every day....probably 2 per

week will be sufficient.
******************************************************************************************************************
It is impossible for me to describe every detail in a text lesson. Learning how to use queries takes practice....learn by doing. StockFetcher can be addictive once you discover the power of this tool.

Once you start making your own queries, you will be amazed at how fun they become and the

POWER you will feel using them

This is how I want you to set up your computer to follow the lesson:

1. Open up a browser window with the Silicon Investor in the window with the Lesson opened.

Reduce the size of the window so that it occupies about 1/3 of the screen and is on the left of

your monitor screen.

2. Now open another browser window (go to File- open new private window) and reduce the size to

fill the other 2/3 of the monitor screen. Open 1 or 2 tabs on this window or more if needed.

In the first tab open StockFetcher using the following address (just copy/paste this address into the

address bar):

stockfetcher.com

The computer set up this way allows you to have an active StockFetcher program to play with as you
read the contents of the lesson on the left.

Your computer screen should now look something like this:

OK.....Now we will begin our first lesson.... which is to give an overview of the features of

StockFetcher and start making a real query.

************************************************************************************************************

This first page is a great starting point for this application.

look at the top right corner - HELP

Left-click on - ALL TOPICS - you will see several examples discussed for Candle Stick patterns as
well as a search box.

These are good for more than Candle Sticks (I don't use them much) but look at how "Close" is used
in a query. Also of query words "high", "low" and "open" may be used.....You are starting to build your
query vocabulary.

You also see how you can reference the close and other data "days ago"

At the top of that page you see ALL..... right click on it and select EXAMPLES.... then Type "close"

(no quotes) in the search box and press <ENTER>

You will see 98 examples of the use of "close" as well as more vocabulary and how these query

statements are used.... you can easily copy and paste an appropriate phrase into a developing

query and not have to reinvent the wheel every time.

Right-click on STOCKFETCHER in the upper left corner to re-enter the main page

Now look at the box titled FORUMS.... there is lots of gold to explore in those discussions where

users post questions about their trial queries and experts on the site try to answer them. As a

non-subscriber you cannot post in the forums but there is no restriction on reading them.

Look at the box titled "Sectors"

Here you find all the stock sectors listed here and how you must spell them in a query. Spelling is

important. Don't click on any now...we will do that in a bit. If you did click on a sector you will get the
start of a query showing all stocks in that sector.

Look at the box titled "Industries"

Look at the selection of industry types....it is similar to Sectors but selects all stocks in that industry.

Look at the box titled "Supported Indicators"

R-click on one and you will see a short discussion of the indicator and a few phrase using the

indicator and two results.

LOOK at the number of indicators supported here ...even Fibonacci Retracement lines (which I

know nothing about :)

Scroll down further and you see "Sectors and Industries"

First of all at a glance you see how a sector is preforming the number in brackets shows how many

stocks are involved in the assessment.

*******************Start of our first Query**************

Time to actually start making a query based on the closing price of stocks.

In the "Sectors and Industries" box.... R-click on the first in the list, ie: Aerospace

When you do this you see a yellow editing box with a simple starting query

apply to Sector(Aerospace)
and add column separator
and add column exchange
and add column sector
and add column industry
and add column separator
Below you will find 5 of 41 charts relating to this query. You only see 5 charts because you have not subscribed to STOCK FETCHER.

Don't worry we shall see all or as many as you want to see by using "close" in the query.

for example: you don't want to see the real expensive stocks. Nor do you want to see the cheapies

either.... say you have a lower limit of $10 and an upper limit of $50 to spend on stocks

let's add the following statement to the bottom of the query:

Where stock close between 10 to 50
If you click on "Fetch stocks" (lower left below the yellow box) and you will see the query retrieved
12 stocks of which you still see only 5.

No problem....simply modify that added statement to a smaller range by changing the 50 to 25

Where stock close between 10 to 25
click on Fetch Stocks .....now we return 5 of the 6 stocks selected...... Hmmmm ERJ looks good

Ok now we are missing one stock so let us change the range to 21 to 35 (the 21 is an attempt to

catch the one in the last modification
Where stock close between 22 to 35
ah hah... we got 4 stocks this time.....CAE looks like the catch in this net

Now we catch the rest
Where stock close between 35 to 50
We get the last 3....none of which seem interesting to me.

WHAT HAPPENS IF WE MAKE A MISTAKE????

In our query let us spell "between" "betwen"

Our query did not seem to work as we netted Boeing Co which is a $300 stock???? where did we go

wrong?

R-click on the small box with the * in it below the yellow box. select "debug filter"

Now we see the correct statements and the number of stocks returned by the green check marks and the

bad statement has a red triangle in it.

correct the spelling of "between" and press Fetch Stocks ... press debug filter again and we are all

check marks and we show our 3 stocks

Conclusion of Lesson One

I hope you liked this presentation. From this simple query we found 2 stocks worth looking at

further...CAE and ERJ.

If these were stocks I was definitely interested in I would then take these screened stocks and subject
them to further investigation using my usual TA and limited FA tools.

Questions on this subject and presentation are welcome.... explore what I have shown you in detail...

Final query is

apply to Sector(Aerospace)
and add column separator
and add column exchange
and add column sector
and add column industry
and add column separator
Where stock close between 35 to 50
what I do is save a query I am working on to a file in Notebook. Nothing worse than losing an idea that you have worked on for hours.... (done that many times) LOL
