A slap on the wrist for assaulting a NYPD cop

Outrageous: Reputed Crips gang-banger Courtney Thompson got barely a wristslap for flinging a bucket of water at two police officers’ heads in one of several anti-police dousings last summer.

Thompson, on probation for robbery at the time of his assault, was facing up to four years in prison for criminal mischief, but The Post’s Andrew Denny and Tina Moore report that Brooklyn DA Eric Gonzalez let him off with only 10 days of community service.

The DA’s Office said the two cops were amendable to the ultralight sentence — but any beat officer would think twice, and then again, before crossing a DA.

In reality, as one police source told The Post, this sentence is “telling everybody that if you want to dump water on a cop you can and there’s no consequences for it.”

By all but winking at such disrespect for police, the DA is sending the wrong message — especially to the city’s teens, who are most at risk at thinking this kind of idiocy is cool.

For a generation, the NYPD has recognized that tolerating “minor” crimes is an invitation to far greater disorder. If the city’s prosecutors no longer agree, New York is in for big trouble ahead.
