The drive toward "smart" cities is fast becoming a global economic driver. The trillions in liquidity being pumped into the system by the world's central banks is tied to all the necessary spending behind it. ALL the big boys are leveraged up to their eyeballs on this one. And that means it's a done deal. I give it 3 yrs. and there'll be over 1,000 of 'em worldwide.
Lots and lots of drones. I expect they think people will "get used to them" being everywhere up there. Like that guy in the CO drone video, "They must be doing something secret...so that's ok then I guess." derp.
Future cities are cities with vision "Highly-developed cities are ready to harvest the benefits of integrating smart technologies holistically." "Video plays an important role in the smart city concept, and the amount of digital video to keep citizens safe and protect city assets is rising sharply. Huge volumes of data from sensors and alarms are coming online in order to give better evaluations from the systems. With all this happening, we need to scale out, and employing more surveillance personnel is not viable.
The big question is, how do we handle all this visual data securely and intelligently to help us make optimal decisions cost effectively? At the same time, we need to improve safety levels and react faster. The only way to deal with all the visual data is to get help from intelligent video management systems that enable operators to make better decisions more quickly and proactively to avoid incidents. The ability to react faster to any incident will limit the impact and the cost of handling the incident. The ability to ward off incidents with predictive abilities would be even better. This is the next phase in the digital video evolution.
Intelligent learning technologies are now advancing video content analysis far beyond the capabilities of legacy, rules-based analytics systems. Today, rather than just evaluating a few pre-defined situations, intelligent video technology can learn directly from the video about objects and their normal relations and behavior. The system will then alert the operator to unusual activities with a qualified recommendation." digiconasia.net
-------------As SELF-sustainability is under attack - these are the three carrots/sticks. The environment - they know what's coming with the GSM/pole shift and climate and they're purposely making it much more difficult, more deadly to deal with (without them). Food security - inequitable food distribution is the biggest cause of worldwide hunger. They don't plan on being "equitable" about food distribution outside the smart cities. Sustainability - you're on your own, among the wolves unless you take the carrot.-------------
"The environment, sustainability and food security will become prominent themes. The majority of cities have their own climate action plan. We will start to see local food production within jurisdictions, including community gardens, resulting in healthier eating and fewer carbon emissions. "Edge computing will develop an enabling framework for mobile assets such as drones and connected cars, meaning they will become more visible and integrated into public and private services. NB-IoT and low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs) will become more widely deployed as IoT solutions deliver effective smart city services. We will start to see more large-scale deployment of these connected devices and sensors. 5G will begin to prove initial use cases such as ‘fibre over the air’ and faster performance of services at the edge such as connected cars, drones and other mobile assets within cities and regions. Wireless providers provisioning 5G will have to engage better with communities and cities as deployments start to affect the visual urban landscape. Smart city crypto and digital currencies will become popular as communities start to redefine trade and the exchange of goods and services. This will force change within existing financial systems. smartcitiesworld.net
"In the upcoming IoT era, data would be everywhere. Open LP not only supports deployment of Location Intelligence (LI) to ingest and process real-time geolocation data, but also encourage built-in smart solutions from a third party through collaborations to make the data actionable for a seamless connection and integration with hardwares and devices, which unleashes the real value of IoT— the smart IoT. Nowadays, sharing and collaboration is the key to the innovation impacting global economy and our daily lives. Open LP has unlocked the power of the integrated “Data analytics + Optimization + Artificial intelligence + Internet of things” (DOAI) smart technologies to form a foundation for the latest wave of innovation taking industry to the next level." wiomax.com

I believe this is a huge underestimation. R&D into it all is already way over this. interestingengineering.com "The smart city market is poised to grow to more than $158 billion by 2022."

An eco-park will be built in Zhenjiang city, Jiangsu province, as a strategic cooperation project between the Chinese and Swiss governments. The project will be implemented by Cleantech Switzerland
sandiego.gov The City of San Diego is one of 10 U.S. cities selected to join Envision America, in which cities will leverage technology collaborators and businesses to address climate change challenges and improve city services. The City of San Diego and UC San Diego are participating in MetroLab Network, which brings together university researchers with City decision-makers to research, develop and deploy technologically- and analytically-based solutions to improve infrastructure, services and other public sector priorities. With assistance from Cleantech San Diego, the City installed 3,000 LED street lights with adaptive controls downtown – one of the first deployments of this technology in the country.
