In business there is an important saying, "culture eats strategy for breakfast." It means that you can come up with all the clever and thoughtful schemes that you want, but if the unspoken rules that guide how people operate are not in place, you will lose big. This is true for all human systems. We simply cannot legislate the right behavior. We can only punish gross misconduct. What you have in the US is 40 years of increasing acceptance of breaking the norms and praising doing whatever you can so long as it does not land you in jail mentality. This has been true in business as much as in politics. That is a cancerous cultural shift that is hard to survive, be it a democracy or not. Fair and just social norms are the most important thing. When that is in place, the differences are smoothed over in time and are tolerated. Without it, you will have cold civil war. Thankfully Canada is not there. But there are too many people who are getting their cue from the US instead heeding its lessons. P.S Anyway that I look at it, I don't see how the US will not implode within 5 - 15 years. Canada's priority must be to diversify its economic base and partnerships as fast as possible.
