I figured I'd consult the best available: stormhamster.com

Always thorough to the point of torture - recommended reading though:

"Attention turns to the developing storm system tomorrow. It's the whole undercut you can really start to see it now. Intense cold air in that pipe in the speckled clouds. Existing storm itself is incredible, heading northward."
[much, much more on his page... stormhamster.com ....much, much more.]

Overnight to this morning. Frames are 20 minute jumps here. Look at the massive expanse of cold air pouring westward through British Columbia and spilling into the Gulf of Alaska and then fueling storm formation.

This cold air means business. It has been pooling for weeks.

Such cold air with those speckled clouds. Also note the surge southward which is our kick to start our redevelopment low for Friday and Saturday.

Yet, the big thing between the two loops, is all the cold air is finally being wrapped in and pulled east to usher in the coming pattern of which is deep winter. It also has no where to go. Has to come along. And it leaves a footprint for a reloading too.

"It looks like the next 2 weeks could be a bit more moderated. The polar vortex has strengthened and shouldn't be displaced from the pole for a bit so jet stream patterns should be a bit calmer for the time. It's going to sit up there, get real cold, then displace again for late Jan."
