I don't see the connection. Zip and CD-ROM don't address the same
market. (A well-discussed topic on this thread) And based on the
experience of my work group (everyone is networked) we seem to need
more zip disks all the time. So far, 1 out of our 12 drives has gone
bad, over the past year, & that because it got knocked around in the
lab. Far from being noncritical, it has now become standard for us:
any new computer we get has to have one. (NO, not because I'm a
shareholder :-) )

Final note: our institution (a national lab) is pushing some standard
Micron package on everyone (they get a special deal) and Micron
includes zips.
