Lots of things "could" be the case. In that election, there were several key elections that were very narrow wins for Trump that could have easily gone the other way. In all of those cases, the final results were within the margin of error of the polls. The polls weren't wrong. The analyses leaned heavily on traditional voting patterns, which is a realistic thing to do.
