There is an admissibility standard for witness testimony. To be admissible the testimony must be relevant, that is, it must serve to prove of disprove some fact of the case. You can't just call a buddy and have him report yesterday's weather or perform a rendition of "My Way." That's a sideshow, not a defense witness. If Trump does have legitimate defense witnesses, I doubt that the D's would object to hearing them.
