The ACA fixed many problems capitalism couldn't fix, including covering preexisting conditions. For example, being a woman was considered a preexisting condition which required higher premiums. The ACA also stopped insurance companies from dropping people after they got sick and got rid of lifetime limits for the very sick.

No, I'm not on the ACA, but most insurance plans have very high deductibles and other limits, for example, paying only 80% after the deductible so an average surgery is around $100k so the minimum bill would be $20k plus the deductible. Most people don't know what your insurance will cover until they need it and by then it's too late to find something else. Before the ACA, insurance companies could require passing a physical before getting any coverage. Sick people can't pass a physical.

Besides, helping people buy insurance is cheaper than paying for their care so it makes economic sense.
