Puerto Rico’s new agony

Puerto Ricans are rightly furious at the continued discovery of unused emergency supplies dating back to the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in 2017.

Last Saturday, a local blogger posted video of unused water, cots and other relief material in a facility in Ponce. Then El Nuevo Dia reported a second warehouse in Guaynabo was also stocked with old supplies.

This follows last year’s discovery of 10 trailers of food, water and baby supplies in an elections-office parking lot, plus thousands of (expired) water bottles sitting on farmland in Dorado, just outside of San Juan.

Gov. Wanda Vazquez just fired three top Cabinet members but still faces renewed calls for her own ouster. After all, the recent earthquakes left nearly 2,000 people in shelters and thousands without water.

Puerto Rico deserves aid from the mainland — but how does Washington help the island get competent, honest government?
