Here are some photos from the hospital. I spare you the gory ones. The ones where she is "walking" are from this morning where we went to visit her and I took her for a short walk so she can go to bathroom. The staff were impressed with her and said that she showed sympathy to other dogs during the night.

Mika's condition is stabilizing, but she still needs to be under observation for another night or two. As you can see from the photos, she is a shadow of her former self (compare to her playful day video in the backyard that I posted a several days ago). The shaved patch you see on her shoulder is for the electrode monitor. The bandages on her paw are for the IV. She's been on continuous IV of antibiotics and pain meds. Her heart beat has lowered from 220 to 160, which we take as indication of receding pain. She's still not eating.

The vet had done a continuous stitching, i.e. one long thread looping over an under. Apparently this is a common practice, but it is not good practice and in newer schools they emphasize doing individual stitches. With a continuous stitch, if it unravels at one point, the whole thing will fall apart...which you'd think is common sense. I've talked with other vets and they all said this is a very rare complication for a routine common operation.

Right now I am focusing on getting her well. She had coagulated blood in her stool this morning, which we think was from the bruised intestines. There are no ruptures to internal organs. Her blood work is also good and we are waiting for culture specific lab results to come back tomorrow. The kids, especially my youngest, are very traumatized by the experience.

I'll keep you posted.
