Legal status. Woodpeckers are classified as migratory, nongame birds and are protected by federal and state laws. Woodpeckers can be legally killed only under permits issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

my house is full of woodpecker holes each year. i had three filled late fall. the pecking sound on metal or the side of your house may be a mating call.

every year i have two or three holes. some in the same place i filled the prior year. I rescued one bird two years ago. he hit something and it knocked him out
. i place the bird on the top of the wood pile so a cat or other animal wouldn't find it. the following morning it was gone. i assume the bird came around and
flew off to come back some later day to peck another hole in my house.
