US evacuation flight from epicenter of coronavirus outbreak to stop in Anchorage

The flight evacuating U.S. citizens from the epicenter of an ongoing novel coronavirus outbreak in China will be stopping in Anchorage, the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services said Monday.

DHSS said all passengers, about 240 people, and the flight crew will undergo health screenings by China and U.S. health officials before they leave Wuhan, a city about 500 miles west of Shanghai. People with signs or symptoms of the virus won't be allowed to board the aircraft.

The plane will refuel at the North Terminal of Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. The terminal is not open to the public. Airport manager Jim Szczesniak said passengers will be held in quarantine and will have no contact with other travelers

The state health department said passengers will be monitored throughout the flight. During the refueling stop, the passengers will go through another screening by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Anchorage. Anyone who becomes ill during travel will be further evaluated, DHSS said.

Hospitals in Anchorage and the Mat-Su are on standby. At Providence hospital, medical director Michael Bernstein said there are more than 35 special isolation rooms where patients could be placed — each with their own ventilation system to keep the virus from spreading.
