Gabriel, I tried your method of calculating 4th quarter unit sales for Dell and got some lower numbers than you.

Q1-(.25 x 2.588 Billion)/2700= 239,630 units
Q2-(.23 x 2.814 Billion)/2700= 239,711 units
Q3-(.23 x 3.188 Billion)/2625= 279,330 units
Q4- Total-Q1,Q2,Q3= 366,529 units

European unit sales for 1997= 19.4 million x .058= 1,125,200 units

Still a healthy number!

Note: The currency variation may throw this method off. It would have the effect of altering the unit price thus throwing the whole calculation off.

IDC data or another source should be more reliable.

What was your source?

Pat

P.S. If I would of thought about the potential problem with this method earlier I could have saved us both some time!
