All this sounds reasonable. There is also the possibility that many of the people who contracted the virus may not feel ill, or have only very mild symptoms. Many of them may not even seek help - but continue to spread the disease.

I think it still makes sense to consider the numbers of “confirmed” cases - because, next to the number of those who lost their lives, this is firm data. There is no doubt that all those numbers will be changing over time, maybe drastically.

The numbers on the JH site likely reflect a situation when the outbreak may have been ignored for a while, the healthcare resources are overwhelmed, etc.
