I do not regard the simple enforcement of civil rights as activism.

FIRST.. THAT is the point.. they WERE NOT being enforced.. The people had to become activists for them.. Was the law enforcing them LOL... OF COURSE NOT !!! Recall Kent State ? the authorities were against the people..

I saw discrimination from many sides.

Same here being a mix.. McFrinese.. Irish/French/Chinese.. I got it from whites (French/Anglos and Jews) AND Chinese.. In Chinatown where I went to school grades kindergarten to 3at a Chinese mission school I manged OK because my Grandpa (Chinese full) had a good rep in the hood.. (slums) among all folks.. Chinatown was the slums.. I am talking about Montréal QC.. Family started a biz after my uncle got back from WWII in the navy.. and employed folks of all stripes in the slums.. that helped..

Activists were recruited to draw draw attention to the south and away from NORTHERN racism

Cannot disagree.. Racism was rife in the North.. and frankly the illusion of cute and cuddly Canucks was largely that.. an illusion.. Many Canucks DO NOT even know that we had Black towns in the east.. terminus of much of the underground railway.. We were NEVER taught that in schools.. I am on record on SI quite often as saying that us Canucks have little right to be smug when considering US folks.. Life was maybe easier but far from equal from what I know...

we seem to have a more pliant society now in the cities than maybe the US has.. but I am not so sure on that... I think the gap if it exists is minor.. and our rural areas are still very SoCon...

european social power structure from where these people came.

There is the highest degree here of racism in my experience from that group of post WWII immigrants.. in Canada

But activists were deluded. They went south because they could not face the evil in their own neighborhoods. They willingly tore up the south because they knew they would die all the quicker in their own cities. It is always somebody else who has to reform and be forced to do so. The fact that your Irish and German neighbors react violently as a society to other foreigners coming into their neighborhoods is avoided. Because you know your little brother and sister will face serious problems if you push the local priest or school to change its ways.

it was more egregious in the south.. but your point is taken as I mentioned above.. Look at the environment anti oilsands activists funded by US oil ... ANYTHING CAN AND WILL BE GAMED...

But my real disgust for activism was for the generation later.

I should clarify (my Kent State mention should reveal this) Real activists are the Rosa Parks.. the nameless folks that marched... The folks you mentiojed have the Orwellian stink of 4 legs good two legs bad morphing nto 4 legs good two legs better... Like our Canadian Suzuki who owns property all around the world and jets about regularly...

You want to understand this country? Try and serve it. Quit bitching about what you don't want to do or never did. FO!, at least until you've been out in the trenches DOING something.

look at my profile.. Pay it forward is a cornerstone of my identity.. Every Christmas my dad would take me and my sister on donation runs.. we would drop toys and food/turkey to folks from his old hood.. old and young.. because we had enough to be OK.. He never trusted the big charities.. I have followed same...
