Compaq Computer Corp. retained its No.1 ranking as the top supplier of computers to business, according to a study by Computer Intelligence.

The report, which surveys more than 5,000 businesses placed Compaq (CPQ) with approximately 17 percent share during the fourth quarter of 1997. That put it well ahead of Dell Computer Corp. with 12 percent and IBM with 10%.

CI also reported that year-to-year sales to the workplace were up about 16 percent in the fourth quarter.

"PC sales to the U.S. workplace continued on a strong positive trend from the lull during the late second quarter and early third quarter," said Aaron Goldberg, executive vice-president of Computer Intelligence. "Large companies have been on a yearlong buying spree that has continued through the fourth quarter. Purchases by small businesses have rebounded from a downturn in June through September. The medium-size business segment is the only one where there is some concern, although even here, we seem to have bounced off the low point we saw in September and October."
