Finally free of EU regulations, Boris Johnson announces the UK will ban petrol, diesel or hybrid cars by 2035 at the latest. - bbc.com

The EU has no plans to ban the sale of hybrids, and does not plan to ban petrol or diesel autos until 2040 at the earliest.

Boris Johnson will outline the policy later at an event to launch a United Nations climate summit in November.

He will say the summit is a chance to "step up" protecting the planet.

The summit, known as COP26, is being hosted in Glasgow. It is an annual UN-led gathering set up to assess progress on tackling climate change.

People will only be able to buy electric or hydrogen cars and vans, once the ban comes into effect.

Johnson is also considering a rule which will require all UK residences to shut-down their natural gas connections and replace these uses with electricity. This occurs as the EU is completing a new major natural gas pipeline from Russia.
