sawdust is a lung irritant, think about asbestos. The problem is more acute if you combine risk sources, it seems to rise more than the sum of the individual risks. So smokers who have occupations as wood workers are the work risk. I would assume smoking and asbestos exposure back in the day would have been especially bad too.
