Steve - thanks for a really interesting analysis. Your idea about not needing a splitter, because you don't need the voice channel, just hadn't registered with me, in spite of my following Mr. Crowe's plan to rewire the world with fiber.

Really, ultimately, the ROBC's are going to HAVE to offer this service or go bankrupt. Eventually a Ted Turner or Rupert Murdoch type (it could be Crowe) is going to come along and announce that he's gotten permission to operate local voice service in 7 or 8 jurisdictions and for $75/month you can have voice service, long distance AND 5mb downstream internet access over your home telephone wire. Cyrix/Compaq will build a $200 PC/telephone (or with an internet touch screen for $500)(actually, a company now has a $500 telephone with an 8" screen and a 56kb modem -- a web PC with a telephone, but I assume a switch for telecom/internet).

The ROBC's would be reduced to serving the most unprofitable parts of their current market. They may be stupid, but I think they've got enough guys who went to business school and saw the difference between AT&T and Western Union to realize they could be out of business in 15 years if they don't keep their market.
