My first vote (after missing Nam with an ultra high draft number) was for McGovern. I was so pissed off that he was trounced I walked away from thinking about politics for the next couple of decades and focused on making a living and raising a family.

Started watching more closely during the Clinton years, got pissed off again when Bush II with the brain of a small ferret managed to get elected by beating a nice competent technocrat who couldn't articulate a vision worth a damn. Then Bush lets Cheney et al bully him into wars that could not be won, wasting $ that could have been used to really make the US a better place. So I’m real sensitive to the notion of Dems shooting themselves in the feet with candidates who can’t win.
