That's the primary difference between Ds and Rs - trust in government. And the left needs Bogeymen to establish that false trust. Still trying to figure if it's like a bad religion or a cult.

Much deeper than that. Multiple factors - many people blame their plight on everything but themselves. So they grasp at the "bad people" straw, such as the rich, big corporations, organized religion, men, whites etc. This is human nature. 97% of people fall into self pity / victimhood at some point in their life. Dims prey on this. However, therein is the fallacy of big government as you empower "the swamp".

Then you you have the "burn it down" crowd who just hate.

I have also met some very successful dims (who are the true racists / bigots) who believe that big govvie is required because they believe the folks in the first group are just utter failures who are unable to take care of themselves.

and just to clarify, there is a very large segment of the R's who ALSO believe in BIG GOVERNMENT, but for different reasons.

It is also human nature for those in power to gather, expand and enforce control on their power base. You will observe that across any institution. To some it is just lust for more power, others push the envelope of legality.

I think our Founders understood the nature of humans and sought to negate these influences.
