The point has been made, but not emphasized. Europeans can't understand why a President should be questioned about such things to begin with, and tend to feel sympathy for what they consider an unimportant lie told in circumstances that should never have, ah, arisen.

As I noted before, they also rather expect politicians to lie in many circumstances, and so are not surprised or terribly bothered by it.

And finally: they never understood Watergate, a far more sinister scandal. There isn't a hope they'll understand this. I think they've got a point.
