The 1918 flu had an R value of about 1.8. It infected an estimated 27% of the world's population. All things the same a virus with an R value in the 3s would be expected to infect a much larger portion of the population. Also, human connectivity has increased, but maybe that will be offset with travel restrictions. Anyhow lets just say by some miracle they manage to contain it to 27% of the population and the death rate is 2%: 7.8B *.27 * .02 = 42.1M.
