A presidential candidate typically picks a running mate from a different swing state where the VP candidate can add their popularity in that local state* to the presidential candidate's popularity in their own home state. But Donald Trump lost his own home state of New York because people who live there know he's a con-man carnival barker who has squandered his father's fortune with a series of disastrously bad deals. Wisely Donald Trump's hidden political advisors chose a hyper-religious idiot from Indiana to appeal to the minority of right-wing voters in the Midwest, and more importantly to provide Trump some religious cover for his slime bag personal and business life.
