Agreed. The use of pilot programs was identified by both vendors and analysts a quarter or two ago. It appears that pilots are being used by an increasing number of customers. What this says to me is that those customers/prospects favorably disposed to implementing technology on faith are being outnumbered by those who have a slightly more hard-nosed approach. They want to see proof-of-concept, they want to check out the vendor's marketing claims, they want to understand how the automation will work in their environment, and most of all they want to understand the ROI. All this adds up to tougher sells in the future, even in the medium and lower end segments. Watch for margins to fall a lot quicker than most think. It is smart of Siebel to start branding the name, especially as they can afford it right now. Did I just say something nice? Aaarrgghh!
