I always prefer a rescue, provided it is a dog that doesn't have sever behavioral problems and matches my lifestyle well. And I appreciate you looking out for me and the dog. Just keep in mind that my timeline is not immediate. The kids (and I) are not ready for another dog yet. I choose summer time so that enough time is passed and also so the kids can play and bond with the new dog well.

Aside from the breeds that I named, I get along well with most shepherd dogs, including Australian shepherds and heelers. I like smaller dogs with a personality too...pit bulls are ok (though illegal in Ontario) The only issue is how much rigorous exercise the dog needs. Intense outdoor workout is not an option in winter. What did you have in mind?
