Not only that, the cost of upgrading the cable infrastructure to support cable modems is very high compared to what a phone company has to do to support xDSL.

The phone companies definitely screwed up with ISDN (too late, incompatible versions), but hopefully with the competition from cable companies they'll do a better job with xDSL.
