They didn't just do it in Africa. They had slaves in the USA too. Freedmen would sometimes have their own slaveownership. One of the largest slaveholders in Texas was a black man.

It was simply part of the times (for thousands of years) until it wasn't. Through the 1600s, most slaves in what is now the US were whites (primarily from Ireland although many of them came from other places as well). .

Muslim slaveholders existed until the 20th century.

Even now there are slaves in the sex business. Women who are forced to work against their will, although this is illegal, of course.
