Hi louel,

This is a great post with good information. I worked in Indonesia 4 years. Thailand 15 months and Malaysia 1 year.

I also worked 26 months in Iran. It was about 8 and a half years in Asia. Between my age of 43 to 55.

The time that I had Flu the most often was in these years in Asia. At first I blamed in the cramped offices, only Malaysia didn't have people piled in small areas.

Between 55 and today -being much older- I haven't had the same number of Flu and as serious as these I had there in South East Asia and East Asia Iran.

I would rank the flu I've got in severity:
1) Thailand
2) Iran
3) Indonesia
4) Malaysia

Out of Asia, I only had a serious Flu in the winter of 2000-2001 in Prague when a nasty virus ravaged Bohemia, the western part of the Czech Republic

I became Flu-aware in the late 90s in Indonesia because I noted that if I was exposed to cold enviroments (cold and freezing air conditioning of building and planes in South East Asia) and or tough winter weather, I would got a cold.

From then on, I started taking care and always travel in planes with a jacket, jumper, or a light windbreaker.

Having witnesses SARS from Bangkok, Thailand, I moved to become Flu aware to become Flu-scared.

I noticed that the Flu I have got in Brazil and in all African countries were mild as compared to the Asian Flu.

Since 2018 I moved to a new level of awareness. I wash hands often. Coming back home. Handling my boy, who brings flu from pre-school. When travelling by air. and before handling kicthen utensils to make cofffee and such.
