China has got the disease increasingly under control. There were only 256 confirmed new cases.

But there were 275 in other parts of the world. The epicentre of the virus has now moved to South Korea (893 cases up from 763); Italy (231 cases from 157) and Japan (domestic infections which increased from 146 to 159).

Hong Kong had 7 new cases bringing the total 81. Singapore had 1 new case bringing the total 90 and Taiwan had 2 new cases raising the total to 30.

Among poorer countries Iran got worse with cases increasing from 43 to 61 with a total of 12 fatalities up from 8 yesterday. The Gulf States now have 22 cases with the disease spreading for the first time to Bahrain (2), Kuwait 5 and Oman (2).

The number of global cases is now 80150 – an increase of 531 in the last 24hrs. 275 of the increase was outside China (Mainland). China’s total confirmed cases are 77659.

Over the most recent 24hrs, fatalities increased globally from 2619 to 2701. China 71 new fatalities, S. Korea 2, Italy 4 and Iran 4. Another passenger from the Diamond Princess died in Japan. The fatality rate is now 3.4%

In the latest data, global recoveries rose by 2649 to 27672. The recovery rate is now 34.5% of all confirmed cases. The daily change in the number of cases that have recovered is nearly five times that of new infections. The number of active cases continued to fall by 1361 in the last 24hrs to 49777. It peaked at 58656 on Feb 18. 81.5% of active cases are considered mild and 18.5% are classified as in a severe condition.

On balance, the threat of a global pandemic is still real and present, but the locus is now outside China. We take the view there will not be a global pandemic. But the global fallout from the disease will be have longer term effects on the world and markets economy than is broadly anticipated.
