There is plenty of data on the flu. The mortality rate in the US is roughly .1%. The death totals are huge because a substantial portion of the population get it each year. 35.5m last winter.

cdc.gov

We don't know the mortality rate of CV yet. However, it appears to be more deadly and require hospitalization more often. The Chinese numbers are skewed because their system was overwhelmed but other countries are seeing mortality rates that are higher than .1%. They are definitely under counting cases but places like Italy and South Korea would need 10,000 plus cases to bring the mortality rate down to .1%.

worldometers.info

and every number I have read indicates it is as at least as infectious as the flu. This number will obviously change as people change their behaviors but those changes have economic impacts.

So yes, the symptoms are similar to the flu but the data we have right now indicates that it is more deadly and likely more infectious. That matters.
