Canadian National Railway (CNR-T) Transport Minister Marc Garneau says it will take several weeks for rail service to return to normal even if blockades come to an immediate end.

Mr. Garneau called the actions of indigenous protesters, who set a fire under a moving train, "extremely reckless."

Canadian National Railway officials recently informed Mr. Garneau that the company had 184 trains parked in Canada and the United States as a result of first nation protests. A backlog of that size will take "many, many weeks" to resolve before service returns to normal. Mr. Garneua says, "If you lined all that up, you'd go from here in Ottawa past Montreal end-to-end. That's a lot of stuff that needs to move and we hope it's going to move as soon as possible."

Mr. Garneau also strongly condemned the vandalism that occurred Wednesday on the CN rail line near Belleville, Ont. Protesters lit a fire on the train tracks west of the Tyendinaga Mohawk camp off Depot Road on Wednesday afternoon. Flames could be seen on the south side of the rail line from the overpass above the camp. Activists continue to mount sporadic rail blockades and protests.
