Jamie, let's say you have a regular gardener that comes by your house. He does good work for the first six months or so.

Later on, the quality of that gardener's work starts going down. He starts showing up late for his job and leaves early. Lots of tasks are left unfinished, and you're having to do a lot of the work he was supposed to do.

According to you, you should be a "good manager" and not fire him. Instead, you should become his teacher, his life coach. Maybe he's going through some tough times in his personal life. It's up to you to fix those problems so that you don't have to fire him.
