2/28/2020 Contest update
(Contest YTD is calculated from 1/3/2020 close.)
Being battered by a Bear is a day at the beach compared to being victimized by a virus. That’s true for humans as well as stocks. The week’s COVID-19 carnage would have been even greater if not for a late Friday rally, which provided enough of a bounce to put the biotech indexes in the green for the day – although still far from green for the week.
At Friday’s close, the Contest median was down -2.08% YTD (vs. up 8.39% YTD a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was down -3.50% YTD (vs. up 4.02% YTD a week ago), the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was down -4.37% YTD (vs. up 4.15% YTD a week ago), while the Nasdaq Composite Index (NCI), was down -5.03% YTD (vs. up 6.16% YTD a week ago).
The TRIL was not yet gone for JBOG’s portfolio as buyout talk for FTSV propelled it skyward. JBOG’s portfolio now has a commanding Contest lead with a 72.48% YTD gain. Also a TRIL holder, FILO portfolio jumped into second place with a 45.54% YTD gain, while BULBA’s portfolio, up 32.23% YTD, slipped to third place.
At Friday's close, just 19 of the 42 Contest portfolios were in the green, with 24 beating the NBI and 25 beating the SPSIBI.
The 197 Contest stock picks have an average YTD gain of 2.95% but a median YTD loss of -6.96%.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week ranked by % Gained and % Lost YTD. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.)
Portfolio adjustments: None.
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits & mergers, greatly appreciated.)
Enjoy a safe & relaxing Leap Year weekend biotechies!
Peace & good health,
Bulba
