> My only issue with this guy is, he makes more money for himself, and his organization, the more panic he can induce.
This was openly addressed in the interview, though. And regarding being unduly alarmist, he refrained from making predictions several times, even though he was prompted to do so by the interviewer. Sensibly, he said that the outcome depends on the actions taken to fight the virus, and then went on to describe consequences of action and inaction, with reason and logic. For example, he pointed to different responses around the world. He also explained why it is untenable to have this virus spread freely, and for it to become endemic in the population without a vaccine. It can be slowed down. Actions taken until a vaccine is generally available will determine how many will die. Ignoring this virus is not an option.
Personally, I am in awe of the world's response to this. We are living in unprecedented times, with the whole world interlinked, exchanging information, science and solutions with incredible speed, to deal with a common global threat. There will be a lot to learn from this. Hopefully, it will be a big win for science. |
